Natural and Pure
Pure Henna Powder (Mehndi)
Pure Henna Powder is a time-honoured Ayurvedic herb rooted in centuries of traditional healing — the earliest mention of henna dates back to Sushruta Samhita (c. 600 BCE). Derived from the dried and finely ground leaves of Lawsonia inermis, the natural dye molecule lawsone is responsible for its rich red-orange tint and conditioning effects — along with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cooling benefits.

FAQs
Our henna powder is produced by carefully picking fresh henna leaves, naturally sun-drying them without any chemicals, and grinding the dried leaves into a fine powder. No artificial colours, preservatives, or additives are added. It is 100% pure Lawsonia inermis leaf powder — nothing else.
Pure henna alone gives a natural red-orange to burgundy tone depending on your original hair colour and how long you leave it on. Results vary:
- Light or grey hair — bright orange to red
- Medium brown hair — warm red-brown tones
- Dark brown or black hair — subtle reddish highlights
For deeper tones, replace plain water with black tea or coffee when mixing your paste.
Pure henna alone cannot give brown or black — you need to combine it with indigo powder:
- For brown — mix henna and indigo in a 2:1 ratio, apply together, leave for 2–3 hours
- For dark brown — mix henna and indigo in 1:1 ratio, apply together
- For black — apply henna first, rinse after 2–3 hours, then apply indigo separately and leave for 2–3 hours
The two-step method always gives richer, longer-lasting results than mixing both together.
The amount depends on your hair length:
- Short hair — 50g
- Medium / shoulder-length hair — 100g
- Long hair — 200g or more
Always make a little extra rather than running short mid-application.
Mix henna powder with warm water gradually until you get a smooth, lump-free paste — similar to thick yoghurt consistency. Let the paste sit for 1–2 hours before applying for better dye release. For stronger colour, let it sit overnight. Add lemon juice for deeper colour release. Add amla powder or aloe vera gel for extra conditioning.
Leave on for a minimum of 2 hours for conditioning and a light tint. For full grey coverage and rich colour, leave on for 4–5 hours. For the deepest possible colour, you can leave it on overnight wrapped in a shower cap. The longer you leave it, the deeper and longer-lasting the colour.
No — never oil your hair before applying henna. Oil forms a barrier on the hair surface that prevents henna from binding to the hair shaft — this reduces both colour results and conditioning benefits. Apply henna on clean, dry or slightly damp hair only.
Yes — henna works well with many natural add-ins:
- Black tea or coffee — for deeper, richer colour instead of plain water
- Lemon juice — for stronger dye release and more vibrant colour
- Amla powder — for extra conditioning, shine, and to enhance colour depth
- Aloe vera gel — for a smoother paste and softer hair
- Coconut oil — a few drops for scalp nourishment and easier application
Yes — henna forms a protective layer on each hair strand, repairs damage, strengthens hair from root to tip, and prevents cuticles from splitting. Regular use supports visibly stronger hair and reduced breakage over time.
Yes — henna's antifungal and antibacterial properties fight dandruff-causing organisms, reduce scalp itchiness, regulate excess oil, and balance the scalp's pH levels — supporting a clean, healthy scalp naturally. Its Kashaya (astringent) property removes excess oil and keeps the scalp dry.
For grey coverage and colour maintenance — once every 3–4 weeks. For conditioning and scalp health benefits only — once every 2 weeks. For hair strengthening — once a week is safe with pure henna as it contains no chemicals.
Pure henna covers grey hair effectively — grey strands absorb henna colour most vividly, often turning bright orange-red. For full grey coverage in darker tones, always follow with indigo using the two-step method. Leaving the paste on for 4–5 hours gives the best grey coverage results.
Pure henna is 100% Lawsonia inermis leaf powder — it gives natural red-orange tones and is completely chemical-free. Black henna contains PPD (para-phenylenediamine) — a synthetic chemical that can cause severe allergic reactions including skin burns, blisters, and long-term sensitisation. Always choose pure henna like Triphal's — and always do a patch test before use regardless.
Pure henna applied to hair is generally considered safe during pregnancy — many Ayurvedic practitioners recommend it as a safe natural alternative to chemical hair dyes. Always do a patch test first and consult your doctor if you are in the first trimester or have sensitive skin. Never use black henna or henna with added chemicals during pregnancy.
Yes — but always do a strand test first. Henna can interact with existing chemical dyes and produce unexpected tones — especially on bleached or highlighted hair. Apply on a small section and observe the result before doing a full application.
Rinse thoroughly with plain water first — henna can be heavy to remove. Then wash with a mild shampoo. Avoid using conditioner immediately after — let the colour develop naturally for 24–48 hours before using any conditioner or oil for best results.
