Natural and Pure
Pure Indigo Powder (Neel)
Indigo Powder is a time-honoured Ayurvedic herb rooted in centuries of traditional healing — with archaeological evidence of indigo-dyed textiles dating back over 4,000 years to the Indus Valley civilisation. Derived from the dried and finely ground leaves of Indigofera tinctoria, it is a completely organic gift from nature for dyeing hair — used in conjunction with henna to achieve a variety of shades from rich black to dark brown, or used on its own to darken existing brown or red hair.

FAQs
Our indigo powder is made from 100% pure Indigofera tinctoria leaves — carefully sun-dried and finely ground with no fillers, synthetic dyes, wheat flour, starch, or preservatives of any kind. The leaves are partially fermented to release the dye, sun-dried until crisp, and then powdered — a completely natural process with no chemical additives.
No — you cannot use indigo powder without henna to dye your hair black. If indigo powder is applied alone on light-coloured or white hair, it will turn the hair blue or greenish. Always apply henna first to create a base colour, then follow with indigo for brown to black results. Indigo can be used alone only to slightly darken existing dark brown or black hair
By adjusting the proportion of henna to indigo, you can achieve various shades ranging from auburn and chestnut to dark brown and black. Here is the colour guide:
- Brown — henna + indigo 2:1 mixed together
- Dark brown — henna + indigo 1:1 mixed together
- Black — henna applied first, rinsed, then indigo applied separately
Apply henna paste to your hair and leave it on for at least an hour — rinse it out preferably without using shampoo. Then apply indigo immediately on damp hair and leave it on for an hour before rinsing. You can apply indigo right after the henna, or even the next day, to transform henna-coloured hair into deep black.
It depends on the shade you want. It is important not to mix the two powders directly if you want deep black — doing so gives a brown or auburn shade instead. For deep black, the key is to first apply henna and then follow up with indigo separately. For brown shades, mixing together works well.
Leave indigo paste on for 1–2 hours for brown shades and up to 2–3 hours for deeper black results. The colour from henna and indigo typically lasts 4–6 weeks depending on hair type, washing frequency, and maintenance.
The amount depends on your hair length — use the same quantities as henna:
- Short hair — 50g
- Medium hair — 100g
- Long hair — 200g or more
Always make a little extra to avoid running out mid-application.
Yes — indigo powder is a natural remedy for premature greying, imparting a rich black hue and strengthening hair follicles. Unlike chemical dyes that can worsen greying, indigo is gentle and safe. For complete grey coverage, always use the two-step method — henna first, then indigo.
Yes — it is safe to use natural henna and indigo on chemically treated hair. However, wait 5–6 weeks between a chemical treatment and natural hair colouring. Always do a strand test first to check for unexpected colour reactions.
Yes — indigo powder guards against excessively oily, dry, or scaly scalp conditions that frequently contribute to dandruff. Regular use from a young age can help avoid excessive dryness and itching and lower the risk of fungal infections.
Yes — mix indigo with warm water for a smooth paste. If indigo does not stick easily to your hair, add egg white to the mixture for better adhesion. You can also add a few drops of coconut oil for easier application and extra conditioning.
Pure indigo applied topically to hair is generally considered safe. Always do a patch test first and consult your doctor before use during pregnancy — especially in the first trimester.
